Why Censorship? Why NOw?

While Internet censorship might seem like a new issue, citizens of the United States have been struggling with censorship for years.

Form groups of three. Each group should have a writer, a moderator, and a lead presenter. The writer will take notes on the discussion. The moderator will help to keep the group on track. The lead presenter will do the majority of the talking during the final presentation to the class.

Each group should choose a unique topic from the below list and research their topic using only online sources.
  • Sedition Act of 1918
  • Gitlow v. New York
  • Near v. Minnesota
  • Smith Act
  • The formation of the MPAA
  • Franklin Roosevelt and The Office of Censorship
  • The formation of the FCC
Each group will then prepare a fifteen minute presentation on this topic which will be shared with the class.

As each group is presenting, take notes on the ways censorship evolved to keep pace with the new ways citizens communicated.

Does it seem as if US citizens are being censored more often or less often than they used to be? Discuss this question with your group.
